PLANTATION OF SACRED GROVES (ORAN)
An ORAN is a sacred grove where plants, trees and animals co-exist in the ancient equivalent of natural sanctuary, usually under he protection of a local deity, after whom the Oran is named.
CTK/TIDS is dedicated to reviving and nurturing Orans in the region, for the enhancement of the environment, the people and to reclaim the desert land. For example, we have revived an Oran at Damodara village, 25km from Jaisalmer, planting diverse saplings to provide a renewable source of fodder, grass and fuel for people, livestock and wild animals. To address the growing need for wood, a large number of saplings have been planted at Rohida were planted , together with a small nadi (pond) next to the grove.
During your stay you will have the opportunity to meet with TIDS experts, local people and villagers and enjoy the experience of understanding how life has been lived for centuries in one of mankind's most unique settings. You will leave CTK Jaisalmer with the knowledge that you have helped to make a difference, and with memories and images that will last a lifetime.
